Blue Origin is a major player in the booming commercial spaceflight industry. Blue Origin recently leased Launch Complex 36, located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, from the United States Air Force. To protect their massive New Glenn rocket from lightning, Blue Origin contracted SLS to design a brand new lightning protection system for LC-36. SLS has also worked with Blue Origin to establish in-flight lightning mitigation strategies for the New Glenn rocket, and lightning protection strategies for the first stage booster during its return trip to Port Canaveral after having landed on an offshore ship.
